Although not specifically about stained glass, this book will be of interest to readers who want to learn about the history and theology of windows depicting this scene, such as that at St Mary’s Church, Fairford, (Gloucestershire). According to apocryphal books such as the ‘Gospel of Nicodemus’, the Harrowing of Hell describes events in the three days between Christ’s Crucifixion and Resurrection, during which time he descended to Hell, debated with infernal adversaries, and liberated Adam and Eve and the ‘ancient just’ from Limbo. Morris and Company’s Stained Glass for the Chapel of Cheadle Hospital from designs by William Morris and Edward Burne-Jones, by Peter Cormack. This is the catalogue of an exhibition staged by the nineteenth-century design specialists, Haslam & Whiteway Ltd, at the 2008 London Olympia Arts and Antiques Fair. The chapel of Cheadle Hospital (near Manchester, England) was glazed between 1906 and 1915. The scheme consisted of full length Old and New Testament figures together with narrative schemes. The glass was removed after the hospital closed some years ago. 49 pages with good colour illustrations. £10. Available via the Haslam & Whiteway website.
